DFAT Leadership and Strategy Engagemen
Guiding senior executives to clarify direction, align purpose, and build enduring leadership.
Strategic outcome sought
RDL partnered with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to support a senior leadership cohort of twenty executives as they worked to clarify direction, strengthen alignment, and build a system of leadership that reflects the expectations of the communities they serve.
Our process
he engagement began with a deep evaluation of current performance, behaviours, and operating rhythms. From there, we guided the group through the design of a strategic architecture that set clear priorities, defined success, and created a practical framework for decision-making across their portfolios. This work ensured that the strategy was not only credible on paper but grounded in the realities of their domestic and international operating environments.
Once the strategic architecture was agreed, we facilitated the development of detailed action plans. Each plan translated intent into measurable activity, enabling leaders to understand their individual accountabilities and how their work connected to broader departmental outcomes.
Creating legacies
A key element of the program was the follow up. RDL provided ongoing guidance, coaching, and structured support to help leaders maintain momentum and deliver on their commitments. This was not about oversight or control. It was about creating a space for reflection, challenge, and disciplined execution. We served as a thinking partner, helping leaders stay aligned, navigate complexity, and remain accountable to the goals they had set.
The result
The result was a more cohesive leadership team with a shared understanding of direction, stronger operational clarity, and a renewed commitment to delivering public value with purpose and consistency.
RDL continues to support government leaders in Australia and internationally to build capability, improve alignment, and create leadership legacies that endure.
